After Kylian Mbappe and Neymar both left friendlies injured, Julien Laurens and the FC crew discuss which player is more important to PSG.

Paris Saint-Germain have injury concerns over Kylian Mbappe and Neymar ahead of their crucial Champions League clash with Liverpool next week.

The duo were substituted with injuries while playing for France and Brazil respectively on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, PSG announced that Mbappe has a bruised shoulder, while scans on Neymar showed a right adductor strain. Both will undergo a 48-hour period of treatment before further evaluation.

However, while sources tell ESPN FC that PSG are confident Mbappe will be fit to face Liverpool, there is more pessimism over Neymar’s availability.

Mbappe, 19, was withdrawn before half-time in France’s 1-0 friendly win over Uruguay when he fell awkwardly on his right shoulder after a challenge by Uruguay goalkeeper Marin Campana.

While signs for his availability for the potentially make-or-break Liverpool match are positive, a source told ESPN FC he is likely to miss PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Toulouse on Saturday.

PSG are third in Champions League Group C after four matches, a point behind Napoli and Liverpool and one ahead of Red Star Belgrade.

Neymar suffered the injury as he attempted to shoot in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Cameroon. He was replaced in the eighth minute but the national team doctor was optimistic that the injury was not serious.

“He felt some discomfort in the groin region and left [the pitch] complaining about that discomfort,” Rodrigo Lasmar told Sportv.

“He was evaluated and he has already started treatment but will need a little bit more time to have a better assessment, with a scan, but initially it doesn’t seem like an important injury.”

Asked whether the Brazil international would be available against Toulouse and Liverpool, Lasmar said: “It’s important to wait approximately 24 hours more.”

Neymar took to social media to confirm what the doctor had said. “Thanks to everyone who sent me messages wishing me a quick recovery, I don’t think it’s anything serious,” he wrote on Instagram.

Brazil won the match with Neymar’s replacement, Richarlison, scoring the only goal a minute before half-time. It took Brazil’s record since the World Cup to six wins in six games, with six clean sheets.

“We ended the year happy with the work we’ve done up until now — these last games were important to help us recover after the setback that was the World Cup,” Neymar said.

“We remain strong, focused and looking to always get better.”

Information from Julien Laurens, Adriana Garcia, Jonathan Johnson and Reuters was used in this report.
