Ligue 1 Champions AS Monaco have announced that talismanic captain Radamel Falcao has inked a contract extension through to June 2020, putting paid to rumours of an imminent departure for the Colombian international.
AS Monaco’s stunning Ligue 1 title-winning campaign garnered plenty of international interest in their players – Kylian Mbappé, Thomas Lemar, Tiémoué Bakayoko – but the principality club has struck in a blow in their quest to hang onto their team by signing captain and top scorer Radamel Falcao to a new deal.
“I’m very happy that Falcao’s contract has been extended,” declared Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev of the 30-goal, six-assist Colombian. “I have always felt that he is one of the best strikers in world football and this season he proved that his talent is still intact. It’s very satisfying to keep him on as a goal-scorer and a leader in our team. After this exceptional season, this deal underlines our ambition for the future.”
Indeed, it was one of Falcao’s most prolific-ever seasons. Despite his having struggled to get going in spells with Chelsea and Manchester United – there was no shortage of interest in the 31-year-old’s signature, notably from China, but Falcao had no doubts in his mind.
Falcao: ‘Continue the adventure’
“I’m extremely happy to continue the adventure with AS Monaco. After this incredible season, during which I returned to my best form, I had only one desire: to extend the adventure!” he said upon putting pen to paper. “I’m convinced that this project will be just as exciting next season, as the club continues to strive to be the best.”
The decision by Falcao, an influential figure in Leonardo Jardim’s squad, to stay could well prompt the principality club’s other targeted talents to think twice before accepting offers, even though the sums reportedly being offered by the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal for teenage sensation Mbappé would he hard to refuse.
